VATA - Ether and Air / Moving Force

Vata is the subtle energy consisting of the elements of ether (space) and air. The qualities of Vata are light, cold, dry, mobile, subtle, clear, and rough. The Vata dominant individual is tall or short with a thin build and long, narrow, or small features. In balance, the Vata person is lively, creative, quick, and spontaneous. When Vata is in excess anxiety, fear, insomnia, indigestion, and fatigue may be experienced. The light, cold, and irregular nature of Vata is grounded by warm, wet, heavy, and nurturing methods.

PITTA - Fire and Water / Transforming Force

Pitta is the dynamic force comprised of the elements of fire and water. The nature of Pitta is light, hot, oily, mobile, liquid, and sharp. The Pitta dominant individual is of a medium height and bone structure, with well-proportioned medium-size features. The natural state of the Pitta person is intense, purposeful, sharp, and orderly. In excess, Pitta can lead to anger, jealousy, inflammation, hypertension, and ulcers. The hot, passionate, and piercing nature of Pitta is calmed by cool, soothing, and diffusing means.

KAPHA - Water and Earth / Binding Force

Kapha is the stable form composed of the elements of water and earth. The characteristics of Kapha are heavy, cold, oily, static, gross, cloudy, smooth, slow, wet, dense, and soft. The Kapha dominant individual is taller or shorter than average with large bones, a solid build, and broad or full features. When balanced, the Kapha person is relaxed, patient, conservative, and stable. Accumulated Kapha can create lethargy, depression, weight gain, congestion, and attachment. The cool, damp, and heavy nature of Kapha is balanced by stimulating, warming, and circulating ways.
